The first match of the season was played on Monday evening. Very frustrating that the road works outside the car park are causing such chaos. This resulted in the match not being able to be finished before darkness fell. From the games that were played it was a win for Yelverton, 24-49.
Here is a screen shot of the main bit of the scoresheet.
The comments section (not shown) adds that the first set tie breaker went to 11-9
We are starting a session on Thursdays, from 6pm, for people who have played before but have been away from the game for a while. If you want to get back into tennis, with a view to joining the main club sessions, then this will be for you. It is £3 a session and we have rackets you can borrow. Turn up, pay and play.
This year we are drawn at home against Tavistock. This is a big club and, if they wished, they could field their A team against us. We will be striving for an upset just as we did last year against Yelverton.
The match will be held on the evening of the 23rd May. Two mixed doubles pairs from each club will play each other over the best of three sets. Seven point tie-break at 6-6. Points for each set won. If equal then it goes to games won. If still equal then the away team wins.
Teams home match days shown in brackets.

Matches are the best of 3 sets. The first two sets have a 7 point tie break at 5-5.
If a rubber is tied one set each, a 10-point tie break will be played to determine the winning pair.Scoring is one point for every game won, plus a 6-point bonus for the winning pair.
Starting times for matches will normally be between 6pm and 6:30pm, to be negotiated with the opponents
As from this Wednesday we are switching to the summer time slot for club sessions. The session will start at 4pm. It is hoped that people will drift in after work at whatever time they can make it and the session should continue into the evening.
The full plan for the week is available on our schedule
The Plymouth and District League AGM was held on Wednesday 23rd March. The issue that mattered most to our club was whether the ladies team would be accepted in the league. This may seem strange since they were playing last year but a combination of special circumstances last year and strange rules (and attitudes) in the league meant that there was meant to be a vote, affecting several teams. The vote was changed to a lucky dip selection and our team was one of the three lucky ones.
The other issue that might be of interest was the scoring system, where the system trialled last year was agreed upon for the future.
The draw for the mixed-doubles knockout cup was held and our first round match is at home against Tavistock.
The clubs AGM, held on Tues 22nd March 2022, voted for a new Constitution
The changes were motivated by a desire to allow more flexibility both in terms of members playing arrangements and also in running the club for the committee. It is hoped the new document will also be easier to read and, with luck, will not need to be read very often.
The first league match of the new season will be in the week starting 2nd May. If it is a home match, then we play on Monday evenings. Away matches could be any evening.
Courts have been booked for the Thursday evenings for the two weeks before this.
Thursday 21st and 28th from 6pm
Everyone who would like to play in the mens doubles this season is invited to play.
This does not mean only those who are confident of being selected. If last season is any guide then there will be weeks when we are just happy to scrape together four male players.
Anyone who is not bothered about playing in the league but likes playing mens doubles is also invited. You can give the aspiring team members some practice.
There will be a match once a week for both mens and ladies teams in most of the weeks of May, June and July. The club has one mens team in division 4 of the Plymouth and District league and one ladies team in division 5. Mens home matches will be on a Monday evening and the ladies will be on Tuesday evenings. Two pairs are needed for each fixture. Both pairs will play against both the opposition pairs in best of three sets, the third set, if necessary, being a 10 point tie break. Play starts sometime between 6pm and 6:30pm and may go on for 2 or 3 hours. There are no match fees. Players will be asked to arrange their own transport. (Generally there will be a lift on offer if wanted.)
