There is no light in the evenings for club sessions anymore so, until the clocks go forward again in the spring, the Wednesday club session will start in the afternoon at 13:30pm.
Sunday 26th September was cloudy, cold and sometimes windy. Many club members, not just those playing, braved the conditions to cheer on the competitors. We started proceedings with the final of the mixed doubles, played between Nicky Slight with Adam Clynch and Anne Hughes with Doug Langford. This was a close affair which went into the third set champions tie break.
The game was won by Nicky and Adam 6-3 3-6 10-4.
You can also see the full list of scores for the whole draw this year.
There was to be no rest for Nicky at any stage of the day. Next, with partner Debbie Bauckham, she had to take on hot favourites Jess Randell and Margie Johnson. The partners were drawn randomly this year, rather than with a view to pick equally matched pairs, and the computer in its wisdom picked a pairing of two of the strongest players. The match was still competitive, with good and sometimes long rallies. The final score:
Margie and Jess win 6-1 6-1.
The mens doubles match was played at the same time as the ladies. This match proceded more slowly, both due to lots of deuces and due to the closeness of the score. Tim Randell and Phil Hughes played Chris King and Pete Brownlow. The first set went to Phil and Tim and the second to Pete and Chris, hence the need for a third set tie break, first to 10 points.
The result was a win for Tim and Phil, 7-5 5-7 10-6.
Whilst this gruelling mens doubles final was still being fought out, the ladies singles finalists started their game. This was a repeat of lasts years final, between Jess and Nicky. After a pause to watch the excitement of the tie-breaker, the match was completed with the same winner as last year, Jess, 6-1 6-0.
The final event of the day was the mens singles final. This was also a repeat of the previous year, with Tim Randell playing Chris King. It was a closer affair than last year and Chris was able to take more games off Tim than had been seen for some time. The crowd were very entertained (although, it has to be said, we were all getting very cold by the end.)
The result was a win for Tim 6-4 6-2
The event ended with a buffet, prize giving and a thank-you to Dylys for her many years contribution to the club and committee. Expect more pictures to follow.
With the evening day light hours shortening, Rusty Rackets will be taking a pause. Expect to see anouncements of its return sometime around April.

A reminder of the timetable for arranging matches in the club tournament …
Starting date where formal rules apply 15th August
Round of 16 must be finished by Thursday 26th August
Quarter finals must be finished by Sunday 5th September
Semi finals must be finished by Thursday 16th September
Last year showed we need some formal rules when time is running out. If we enter those 10-day periods above and it has not been possible to find mutually convenient times for ties, then one of the players/pairs, the ones with the lower competitor number, will be tasked with offering at least two dates to the opposition. One of the dates must be on a weekend, one in the evening. Other dates may be offered in addition. The other player or pair must then accept one of these dates or withdraw.
