New Constitution

The clubs AGM, held on Tues 22nd March 2022, voted for a new Constitution

The changes were motivated by a desire to allow more flexibility both in terms of members playing arrangements and also in running the club for the committee. It is hoped the new document will also be easier to read and, with luck, will not need to be read very often.

Mens Team Practice

Mens Doubles Sessions

The first league match of the new season will be in the week starting 2nd May. If it is a home match, then we play on Monday evenings. Away matches could be any evening.

Courts have been booked for the Thursday evenings for the two weeks before this.

Thursday 21st and 28th from 6pm

Everyone who would like to play in the mens doubles this season is invited to play.

This does not mean only those who are confident of being selected. If last season is any guide then there will be weeks when we are just happy to scrape together four male players.

Anyone who is not bothered about playing in the league but likes playing mens doubles is also invited. You can give the aspiring team members some practice.

About the League Matches

There will be a match once a week for both mens and ladies teams in most of the weeks of May, June and July. The club has one mens team in division 4 of the Plymouth and District league and one ladies team in division 5. Mens home matches will be on a Monday evening and the ladies will be on Tuesday evenings. Two pairs are needed for each fixture. Both pairs will play against both the opposition pairs in best of three sets, the third set, if necessary, being a 10 point tie break. Play starts sometime between 6pm and 6:30pm and may go on for 2 or 3 hours. There are no match fees. Players will be asked to arrange their own transport. (Generally there will be a lift on offer if wanted.)

Early information on League for 2022

We have asked for the mens home matches to be played on Mondays and the ladies on Tuesdays.

The weeks where a match is likely to be scheduled are those commencing on …

May 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd

June 6th, 13th, 27th

AGM 2022

We will be holding the AGM on evening of Tuesday March 22nd in the club house. Further details and an agenda will be circulated nearer the time.

Winter Schedule

There is no light in the evenings for club sessions anymore so, until the clocks go forward again in the spring, the Wednesday club session will start in the afternoon at 13:30pm.

Club Tournament Finals Day 2021

Sunday 26th September was cloudy, cold and sometimes windy. Many club members, not just those playing, braved the conditions to cheer on the competitors. We started proceedings with the final of the mixed doubles, played between Nicky Slight with Adam Clynch and Anne Hughes with Doug Langford. This was a close affair which went into the third set champions tie break.

The game was won by Nicky and Adam 6-3 3-6 10-4.

You can also see the full list of scores for the whole draw this year.

There was to be no rest for Nicky at any stage of the day. Next, with partner Debbie Bauckham, she had to take on hot favourites Jess Randell and Margie Johnson. The partners were drawn randomly this year, rather than with a view to pick equally matched pairs, and the computer in its wisdom picked a pairing of two of the strongest players. The match was still competitive, with good and sometimes long rallies. The final score:
Margie and Jess win 6-1 6-1.

The mens doubles match was played at the same time as the ladies. This match proceded more slowly, both due to lots of deuces and due to the closeness of the score. Tim Randell and Phil Hughes played Chris King and Pete Brownlow. The first set went to Phil and Tim and the second to Pete and Chris, hence the need for a third set tie break, first to 10 points.
The result was a win for Tim and Phil, 7-5 5-7 10-6.

Whilst this gruelling mens doubles final was still being fought out, the ladies singles finalists started their game. This was a repeat of lasts years final, between Jess and Nicky. After a pause to watch the excitement of the tie-breaker, the match was completed with the same winner as last year, Jess, 6-1 6-0.

The final event of the day was the mens singles final. This was also a repeat of the previous year, with Tim Randell playing Chris King. It was a closer affair than last year and Chris was able to take more games off Tim than had been seen for some time. The crowd were very entertained (although, it has to be said, we were all getting very cold by the end.)

The result was a win for Tim 6-4 6-2

The event ended with a buffet, prize giving and a thank-you to Dylys for her many years contribution to the club and committee. Expect more pictures to follow.
