Rusty Rackets Plus !

The Rusty Rackets group have decided to continue through the winter. A new time slot is required so Sunday afternoons have been chosen. Starting time 1:30 pm.

The group have issued an invitation for the less rusty players to come and join in on this session. Come and meet and mingle.

Members should expect a very mixed set of abilities. In order to manage the fun for those swinging a racket for the first time, through to those offering help and advice, the normal club rules for sets are discarded in favour of much more flexible arrangements.

For anyone thinking of joining the club, this is a good time to turn up and say hello. You will be welcomed and will get to play and can see if you like it/us.

Roy Gibbs 2019

On Sunday 6th October we staged the annual Roy Gibbs memorial tournament.

This is a round-robin mixed pairs event with the twist that for each group of 4 players you play with your normal partner, then against them, and accumulate an individual score

There are two pools of players, this time called the blue group (with most of the stronger players) and the red group, and each pair is made up of a red and a blue group player. This year we played a championship tie break for every game – first to ten points. This ensured plenty of changes of server and changes of ends and, possibly, just a little confusion.

It may seem confusing, but it is likely that the winner after all this is, indeed, the best player on the day. As evidence of this, the winner of the blue group this time was the same as last year – Chris King, seen pictured below receiving his rose bowl trophy from our Chairman (and winner of the red group), Dudley Tolkien.

The full scores are in this PDF (opens in a new window.)

After the matches were completed, the scores were added up, the last of the cream tea was consumed and we had tidied up a little, the presentations were held, both for the Roy Gibbs tournament and for the club tournament.

We seem to have a lot of silver wear as a club. Your humble correspondent tried to get a decent picture of it all but failed, the best picture slightly marred by the chairman’s eyes being closed. (I have no idea how to avoid this apart from taking hundreds of shots, which seems to me to spoil the mood a bit.) I may post some of these pictures on Facebook.

It is getting dark !

The Wednesday club session start time has now been brought forward to 1:30pm

See you there ?

If you are thinking of joining a tennis club, please do come to one of our sessions and Wednesday afternoons, from 1:30pm, are one time we will be there to welcome you.

Club Tournament

The club tournament finals were played on Sunday 1st September. The sun was shining, it was perhaps a little windy.

The first match was the mens singles between Dave Roberts (facing the camera in the shot below) and Steve Maller. Both players styles are such that there were many long rallies. The score, which doesn’t reflect the closeness of the contest, was 6-0 6-2 to Steve.

Next the mens doubles and the ladies doubles were played at the same time.

The line up for the men’s tie was Simon Coll and Pete Brownlow vs Dave Roberts and Steve Maller.

Simon (left) and Pete (right) are on the far side of the court.

A slightly tiring Dave and Steve won 6-1, 6-3

The ladies were :

(left to right)

Anne Hughes and Anne Vickerstaff
vs
Margie Johnson and Chloë Vickerstaff.

Margie and Chloë won
6-1 6-3.

The doubles pairings were a random selection this year. Sometimes the organising committee attempts to produce evenly matched teams. This year we are pleased to have some new members and, when doing the draw, there was some uncertainty about peoples strength. Hence the random pairings produced the two finalists from the mens singles on the same side.

The event was well attended. Most of the crowd can be seen paying full attention, although perhaps the dog and the baby less so.

The finale was the mixed doubles.

Chloe Vickerstaff and Steve Maller
vs
Adam Clynch and Anne Vickerstaff.

Adam is near-right here

The first set went to Chloe and Steve, 6-1.

Shortly after this baby Imogen made her feelings felt about mums absences. So we had a break for afternoon tea. Many thanks to all who baked, cooked, helped with the food, laid things out and cleared things away. The wind dropped a little, the sun kept shining and the match resumed.

The second set went to a tie breaker, eventually won by Chloe and Steve.

Yelverton Away

Last match of the season saw us visiting Yelverton. One of the pairs had a very long match in the first set of games, first set lost 5-7 and then second won 7-5 and then a tie break that went to 11-13. However the time and effort were worth it as we gathered two points from it.

That was as good as it got, the other sets were lost, although there were some enjoyable rallies. Thank-you to Yelverton for some friendly hospitality. Below is one of the games being played…

Big Tennis Weekend

The big day arrived with fine weather and a pleasingly high number of visitors.

If you didn’t get the chance to come along, don’t worry, we are still here. Perhaps our rusty rackets sessions would be for you. We do sessions for adults, Tuesdays from 6pm. All levels welcome. Cost £2.50 per person. All equipment provided. Any queries – email info@plymstocktennis.org.uk

If you are thinking of joining the club, just turn up, Saturday afternoons are a good time to come and have a chat.

Ivybridge Home

This match started with a bit of stress because Chris K was at home bathing the baby (literally) when he should have been playing tennis. A panicked phone call and he arrived, fashionably late. Meanwhile our number two pairs had decided to start playing.

The game between the two number one pairs eventually got underway and went on for some time. In the process we won a set (that’s another point, hurrah) but lost the tie break.

That was about as good as it got. Exhausted from tie breaks and baby duties, our number one pair rather fell away in the second match and the number one pair of Ivy Bridge had no problem against our gallant but outclassed second pair.
